Expect peaceful snowy landscapes, snow-laden trees, icy rivers, frozen waterfalls and quiet mountain scenery as you learn to glide, develop your skills and enjoy relaxed lunches in local restaurants
This trip is designed as a gentle but rewarding introduction to cross country skiing. Each day, your guide takes you from Guillestre to a different Nordic area, where you will spend time learning the techniques of balance, glide and control before putting them into practice on short tours and easy pistes. With two sessions a day, plenty of time to progress, and lunches booked in local mountain restaurants, the holiday combines skill-building with the pleasure of exploring the winter landscape at a relaxed pace.
The southern French Alps are an ideal place to learn. These quieter mountain valleys are known for their reliable snow, sunny climate and varied high altitude Nordic ski domains, offering a more peaceful and authentic alternative to busy downhill resorts. Expect snow-laden trees, icy rivers, frozen waterfalls and wide open views as you learn to ski in one of the Alps’ most rewarding winter regions.
You will be going out each day to experience the best of the via ferratas in the French Alps with your guide. He will collect you each morning from your hotel and drop you back off afterwards so you don't have to plan anything else for your trip!
The grading of the via ferratas we will be using on this trip will vary from easy to difficult. We have saved the most challenging routes to towards the end of the trip so you have the opportunity to develop your skills and head for heights gradually! Some of the routes start with an easy section and become progressively more difficult with options for opting out so there is flexibility to adapt to different levels in the group without penalising anyone!
For your evenings in Gap, there are a wide range of restaurants and bars so you can taste the local gastronomy! We can advise you on our favourites when you are here and book them on your behalf if you wish.
You will travel independently to Guillestre, where you can check in at the hotel located in the heart of this picturesque village. The closest train station is Gare de Mont-Dauphin Guillestre, about 4 km from the village centre, and there are buses (both free and paid options) available from the station to the centre. You can find links to the various timetables here. If you prefer, we can organise a taxi for the final 4 km leg, and whenever possible, we'll coordinate with other participants to help share the cost. This will be arranged closer to the date.
Guillestre is a delightful village with quaint, pedestrian-only streets perfect for a stroll, and offers plenty of outdoor seating on terraces in the main square (near the hotel) for people-watching or enjoying a coffee.
We suggest gathering in the hotel lobby around 18:30 this evening (depending on arrival times) to meet your fellow participants. We’ll reserve a table for the group at a local restaurant for dinner (payment directly at the restaurant) and will confirm this with you nearer the time.
After breakfast, you will check out of your rooms and can leave your luggage at the hotel before heading out for your final day on skis.
Today you travel to Crévoux, a quieter and more intimate Nordic ski area with around 45 km of trails, set in a peaceful forested valley. This is a great place to consolidate everything you have learned over the previous days.
As you ski through the trees, keep an eye out for the outdoor art installations and wooden sculptures hidden along the trails, adding a unique and playful element to your final day on snow. With improved confidence and flow, you will be able to ski more independently, enjoying longer sections of trail and making the most of the surroundings.
After a final lunch and afternoon session, you will return to Guillestre by around 17:00. From here, you can collect your luggage and continue your onward journey, with options for both daytime and overnight train travel.
If you prefer a more relaxed departure, we can arrange an additional night in Guillestre on request.
Today you head to Ceillac, one of the most picturesque Nordic ski areas in the southern French Alps. Set in a broad, high mountain valley and surrounded by dramatic peaks, Ceillac offers around 45 km of cross country ski trails, providing a varied and scenic setting for your day on the snow.
The morning session focuses on developing your technique; improving glide, learning how to manage gentle slopes and linking movements more smoothly. With growing confidence, you will begin to ski more continuously and explore a little further on the trails.
After a relaxed lunch, and if time allows, there may be the chance for a short stroll through the charming alpine village of Ceillac before heading back out on skis. In the afternoon, you will start to link trails together and enjoy your first short tours through the valley — a real milestone in your progression.
Back in Guillestre, enjoy a relaxed evening — perhaps unwinding in the spa, stopping for a drink in the village, or heading out for dinner with others in the group.
Meet your guide in the morning. If you require hire equipment, you will collect and fit it before heading into the mountains.
Today, you will ski in Arvieux, one of the southern French Alps’ best-known Nordic ski areas, set at the foot of the legendary Col d’Izoard. With 28 km of groomed trails for both classic and skating, stretching from 1550 m to 1780 m, Arvieux is known for its reliable snow and excellent conditions throughout the winter. Thanks to its altitude and snow record, it is also a favourite training ground for local, regional and even national teams.
For your first day on snow, it is an ideal place to begin. The morning focuses on getting familiar with the equipment, finding your balance and learning the basics of glide on gentle terrain. After a relaxed lunch, continue with fun drills, simple exercises and short outings on easy pistes, gradually building confidence and control.
Return to Guillestre at the end of the afternoon and enjoy the evening at your own pace - perhaps with a spa session at the hotel, a drink in a local bar, or dinner with the group in one of the village restaurants. We will book a table for anyone who would like to eat out together.
This is the sad day we say goodbye, and we hope you are going back exhilarated and feeling on top of the world. It is possible to extend your stay to do more self guided cross country skiing if you wish or try other winter activities. Please just ask when you book.
We can organise grouped taxi bookings for you to get to the station.
You will be based in Guillestre for the duration of the trip, allowing you to settle in and enjoy a relaxed pace without changing accommodation. Each day, your guide will collect you in the morning and take you to one of the nearby Nordic ski domains, returning to Guillestre in the late afternoon.
The focus of the trip is progressive learning. Over the three days, you will build the key skills of balance, glide and control, gradually gaining confidence on gentle terrain and small hills, with the aim of being able to enjoy short tours by the end of the trip.
Your days are structured with two ski sessions (morning and afternoon), with a long, relaxed lunch in between. We will book tables in local mountain restaurants for those who would like to eat together, but if you prefer something simpler, all ski areas also have heated picnic rooms where you can enjoy a packed lunch bought in Guillestre.
In the evenings, you are free to explore Guillestre at your own pace. We are happy to organise restaurant bookings for the group if you would like to dine together and experience some of the best local cuisine.
You do not need any previous skiing experience, but a good level of fitness will help you enjoy the trip. If you regularly hike, go to the gym, practise Nordic walking or do endurance sports, you will be well suited to it. Cross country skiing is a cardiovascular activity, but as your technique improves, the effort feels smoother and more efficient, and you can always go at your own pace.

If you’re looking to take the next step after this trip, you might also enjoy our intermediate cross country skiing short break, where you’ll develop your technique further, try skating and experience biathlon. It is sometimes possible to bolt this on to the end of your trip to make a full week.
